Sports at LRPS
Our goal at Long Ridings Primary School is for all students to leave us with increasingly sophisticated movement patterns and important knowledge that will promote future engagement in sports and physical education.
Our curriculum is based around the three pillars of progression, motor competence / rules, strategies and tactics / healthy participation. These three pillars were used to create an impactful and progressive long-term plan that allows everyone to grow regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, or ability. The pupils work in a learning environment that increases their knowledge and prompts good repetitive practise at a high participation rate, thanks to meticulous planning and regular quality demonstrations. We are devoted to offering the highest level of coaching and teaching in each year group. Mr Warren and Mr Cooper, our two PE teachers, teach the lessons.
We are lucky to have extensive playing fields, large playgrounds and a MUGA (multi-use games area) which means PE lessons are rewarding, challenging and fun in a safe and secure environment. Our curriculum design enables pupils to progress their physical, mental, and teamwork skills at a challenging yet realistic rate. We personalise the learning by supporting those that need extra guidance and include activities to push high achievers to develop their skills further. The progression through topics enables KS1 pupils to first develop skills and knowledge of fundamental movements before using them in game related scenarios, whereas KS2 pupils focus on implementing those skills in increasingly tactical environments.
Every week, over 20 sports clubs are available for both KS1 and KS2 students, including football, basketball, dance, and gymnastics. Over two-thirds of students participated in these extracurricular activities during the school year 2022-2023. All kids are encouraged and congratulated for their achievements, and prizes are presented to pupils who demonstrate devotion, perseverance, and fairness.
Moreover, holiday sports clubs are held and based in the large indoor hall and surrounding sports fields and pitches.
